There are 28 alphabets in Arabic language. These alphabets are called as Tahajju Letters.

Class 3: Makhraj – Pronunciation
The places from which Arabic alphabets are pronounced is known as Makhraj.
It is necessary to learn the Makhraj in order to pronounce
the Arabic alphabets correctly.
These Arabic alphabets are produced from various parts of
the mouth including lips, throat, etc.
Totally there are five different places of the mouth from
which Arabic letters are pronounced. They are:
1. الْ خَوْفُ -
Al Khawf – Empty space between mouth and throat
There are three letters that are pronounced
from this part.
They are ا و ي
Al Khawf letters are also called as
Madh letters.
2. اَلْ حَلَقْ Al Halaq – Throat letters:
Six letters are pronounced from the
throat. They are:
It is further classified into
Upper, middle and lower throat.
Upper throat letters are: غ خ
Middle throat letters: ع ح
Lower Throat letters: ء ه

3. اَلِّسَان Al Lisaan – Tongue letters:
Eighteen letters are to be pronounced
from the tongue. They are:

Tongue letters are further
classified into the following categories:
Last part of the tongue: ق ك
Middle part of the tongue: ج ش ي
Edge of the tongue: ض
Tip of the tongue: ت د ط ث ذ ظ ل ر ن ص ز س

4. اَشَّفَتَان As Shafathan – Lip letters:
The four letters of lips are as
follows.
5. اَلْخَيْشُوْم Al Khayshoom – Nasal letters:
The nasal letters are to be pronounced
from the bridge of the nose. The two nasal letters are: م ن
The nasal letters are also called
as Gunna letters.
